What is the meaning of Tajweed? Or Tajweed of the Quran?
Tajweed is the art of reciting the Quran according to specific rules of pronunciation, diction, and intonation, in order to preserve the beauty and precision of the sacred text. In Arabic, the word “tajweed” (تجويد) literally means “to beautify” or “to perfect.”
The rules of tajweed cover several aspects, including:
The correct pronunciation of Arabic letters (makharij al-huruf): Each letter should be articulated from its point of origin in the mouth or throat.
The characteristics of the letters (sifat al-huruf): This includes traits such as force, softness, or nasalization.
The application of the rules of recitation: For example, the prolongation of sounds (madd), stopping (waqf), or assimilations (idgham).
The goal of tajweed is to recite the Quran as closely as possible to that of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), respecting both the meaning and the sound aesthetics.
